Read More2017 has turned out to be a most excellent vintage for music. This is the annual Top 50 countdown – looking at some of this year’s essential releases. As usual, I struggle and even feel guilty (silly I know!) with the releases I’ve left out. Even if I had a top 100 I would feel the same. Gail Priest is a composer from Sydney making experimental sound and electronic music that explores the interaction of the figurative and the abstract, the machinic and the organic, the sensual and the brutal. She travelled to Iceland as a part of a residency and has created a stunning collection of work called Heraclitus in Iceland. It’s a stunning engaging collection that deserves your attention.

Releasing her Thrush Metal EP on a small-run cassette, with a goofy self portrait downing a plate of spaghetti, doesn’t give any indication of the powerful and important songs that lie within. Her reputation has grown and she has just won Triple J Unearthed’s Artist of the Year. I caught up with Stella a few months ago at Waverock Weekender and we chat about gender equality, her incredible songs and what the future holds in store for her. As well, another brilliant young artist, Angie McMahon, releases her new single plus a focus on 2 stellar artists soon to tour – Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit and Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba.
